As millions of Americans vote today, we face a critical moment in our nation’s history. This presidential election stands for more than just our civic duty to vote. It is an invitation to intercession. On this election day, let’s heed the Bible. It calls us to pray for our leaders.

As millions of Americans vote today, we face a critical moment in our nation's history. The presidential election stands for more than just a duty to vote ...

God’s Command: Pray for Leaders

Paul’s message to Timothy is clear:

I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in high positions (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

Paul’s words cut through the politics. They transcend party lines. God commands us to pray. It is not about choosing sides but about obedience to God.

A Lesson from History

Consider the historical context of Paul’s instruction. Paul wrote during Nero’s reign, when Christians endured extreme persecution. Yet, Paul didn’t advocate for resistance. He called for prayer. This perspective challenges us. If early Christians could pray for Nero, we can pray for our leaders.

Why Pray for Our Nation’s Leaders?

Paul provides the rationale in no uncertain terms:

so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity (1 Timothy 2:2).

Here lies the reason: praying for our leaders brings stability. It creates conditions for faith and freedom to thrive. This helps the Church’s mission.

Do we want our society to thrive? Do we want an environment where faith can be freely expressed? Then prayer is essential. Your prayers shape nations. We aren’t spectators at the mercy of politics. Our prayers can change outcomes and help create peace.

How We Should Pray: Four Ways to Pray for Leaders

Paul’s teaching covers a wide range of prayer. Let’s break down each one into action:

  1. Supplication: Ask for the specific needs of our leaders. Wisdom and discernment in their decision-making are chief among these needs.
  2. Prayer: Bring leaders before God. See their humanity, struggles, and need for grace.
  3. Intercession: Pray for their own spiritual well-being, their families, and their advisors.
  4. Thanksgiving: Thank God for a stable government and a peaceful transfer of power.

These four elements form a complete prayer strategy. It goes beyond personal issues and aims for the common good.

Your Prayer Guide for Election Day

So, on this election day, let us be deliberate in our prayers. Focus your prayers on these specific areas:

  • Current Leaders: Pray for wisdom in their final actions. And, may they navigate transitions with grace.
  • Candidates: Seek God’s will for those who will serve.
  • Election Officials: Pray for peace and integrity in their work.
  • National Unity: Let us pray for unity and healing in our divided nation.

Your Role in This Historic Moment

As we await today’s election results, your mission is clear. Continue to pray. Trust God’s sovereign hand. Will you trust that His purposes will prevail, no matter your preferences? Will you pray for our nation’s current and future leaders?

Election Day Prayer

Lord, bless our nation and those who guide its path—

Whether we align with them or walk different ways,

Whether in agreement or in thoughtful dissent.

Guide those who hold the mantle of leadership:

In their decisions, be present

In their challenges, give wisdom

In their service, grant strength

May Your power rest upon our rulers,

Bringing peace among all ranks,

Creating harmony across all conditions.

Beyond our borders, extend Your grace:

To every nation seeking light

To scattered brothers and sisters worldwide

To all who walk in faith

But greatest of all, we await Your coming:

Come, great King of all the earth

Come, Son of God, with swiftness

Come, end the world’s strife and sin

For without prayer, faith cannot flourish—

Not just for self, but for all humanity

Not just for friends, but for every authority

That we might live in peace and unity
