What is Pentecost and Why Does It Matter?
Pentecost marks the day the risen Christ fulfilled His promise to send the Holy Spirit. Fifty days after Easter, the Spirit descended, not just upon the apostles, but into the hearts of all who believe. This moment birthed the church, ignited gospel proclamation, and ushered in the new covenant age of Spirit-indwelt believers. The prayer below exalts the Holy Spirit for His convicting, comforting, illuminating, and resurrecting work. Use it to stir your own heart and to join with the saints in seeking fresh fullness from the Holy Spirit.
Pentecost Prayer: In Awe of the Spirit
O Spirit of the Living God,
We bless You on this holy day when You came in power with wind and fire to dwell in Your people. You were poured out just as the prophets foretold (Joel 2:28) and just as the risen Christ promised (John 16:7).
We praise You for convicting the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8). You cut us to the heart (Acts 2:37). Pierce us again. Expose our sin. Show us our desperate need.
You opened our blind eyes to behold the righteousness found only in Christ (2 Cor. 4:6). You drew us to the Son whom we now trust and treasure (John 6:44). Turn our eyes again and again toward Jesus.
You are our Comforter, our Helper, sent by the Father in the name of the Son (John 14:26). You do not speak on Your own, but glorify Jesus in all You reveal (John 16:14). You teach, You remind, You guide us into all truth (John 16:13). Without You, the Word lies closed; with You, Christ shines forth.
Counselor, Paraclete, stand beside us. Wrap Your presence around the grieving. Strengthen the weary. Sustain the weak (Isa. 11:2; Rom. 15:13).
You dwell in us not as a visitor but as our seal, our pledge, our down payment (Eph. 1:13–14; 2 Cor. 1:22). You cry out in us, “Abba, Father!” (Rom. 8:15). You intercede for us with groanings too deep for words (Rom. 8:26). You give gifts as You will (1 Cor. 12:11), and bear fruit that lasts (Gal. 5:22–23).
You are the firstfruits of the resurrection to come (Rom. 8:23). One day, by You, these mortal bodies will rise (Rom. 8:11), and we will see Christ face to face (1 Cor. 13:12). Because You dwell in us, we will live with Him forever (Rom. 8:10–11).
Until that Day, fill us. Lead us. Sanctify us. Keep us (Gal. 5:16; Rom. 15:16; 2 Thess. 2:13).
Holy Spirit, how we love You! Our Counselor, our Comforter, our constant Friend.
Come, Holy Spirit. Fill us afresh with Pentecost power. Make us bold witnesses (Acts 1:8), living temples (1 Cor. 6:19), until the day You raise us complete in Christ (Phil. 1:6; 1 Thess. 5:23–24).
To the Father, through the Son, in You, Spirit, be all glory. Amen.
