Zechariah 1:3 (CSB)
“So tell the people, ‘This is what the LORD of Armies says: Return to me—this is the declaration of the LORD of Armies—and I will return to you, says the LORD of Armies.'”
Return to Me, and I will return to you. It is easy to read that quickly and miss its weight. A God this holy could have crossed His arms and waited for the people to crawl back, and even then given them only what they had earned, which was judgment. Instead He speaks first. Before they do a single good thing, He calls them home and promises mercy.
This is the mercy Jesus pictured in the prodigal son (Luke 15). While the son was still a long way off, he was seen, and grace got up and ran to meet him.
But do not presume on the promise. He sets the terms, not you. To return is not a wave of religious feeling on a Sunday morning that leaves Monday untouched. Repentance is a U-turn of the whole person. It means laying your calendar and your bank statement side by side and asking what they say you actually love. The affections turn, not only the schedule.
Notice too what returning is not. It is not becoming perfect. It is not defending yourself or explaining away the drift. It is turning when God points and saying, You are right.
The way back is open, and it opens at one place only. Because Jesus lives, there is a road home to God through Him. He does not merely command the U-turn. He is how you make it. If God is pointing at something in you today, the answer is not later. Will you turn to Him now?
Reflect
Set your calendar and your bank statement next to each other and read them as a confession of what you love. Where they point away from God, that is the place to turn. Do not wait to feel something first, and do not turn it into a performance. Turn today, and let Him meet you where you are.
