Zechariah 1:6 (CSB)
“But didn’t my words and my statutes that I commanded my servants the prophets overtake your ancestors?”

God asks whether His word overtook the generations before them, and the answer is written in the rubble of Jerusalem. It did. What He had sent through the prophets caught up with them exactly as He said it would.

That word “overtake” is a hunting word. It pictures something on your trail, closing the distance, coming after you until it runs you down. God had used it before, in the covenant He gave through Moses, where He warned that if the people would not obey, the curses would pursue them until they were destroyed (Deuteronomy 28:45). The exile was no accident. It was the word of God, catching up.

And here is what does not change. It always catches up. It is pride to think you will be the exception, that you can neglect God and outlast the cost, that His word will catch everyone else but somehow lose your trail. You will not outrun the word of God. You will not outlive it.

Which is why the cross is such staggering news. The pursuing curse that once ran down a rebellious people ran Christ down at Calvary instead. He became a curse for us so that the curse would never catch you (Galatians 3:13). The judgment that should have overtaken the guilty overtook Him. God’s anger was not waved away. It was absorbed, in full, by His own Son.

So the word that once hunted the guilty now runs ahead of you as grace. In Christ there is no curse left on your trail. The people in Zechariah’s day finally admitted it plainly: God was right. Will you say the same, and run to the One the curse already caught?

Reflect

Name the place where you are betting you will be the exception, the sin or the neglect you assume you can carry without cost. That is a wager against the word of God, and it has never once paid out. Stop running from the One who is not chasing you to destroy you but calling you to be free. Run to Christ, where the curse has already been spent.

Pray

King Jesus, I have lived as though Your word would catch everyone but me, and called my presumption freedom. I deserved the curse that pursues the guilty, and I cannot outrun it. Forgive me. At the cross that curse caught You instead of me, and now there is nothing left on my trail but Your mercy. Let me stop running and return to You, forgiven and free. Amen.
