Zechariah 1:5 (CSB)
“Where are your ancestors now? And do the prophets live forever?”

God asks a question that lands like a cold hand. Where are your ancestors now? And do the prophets live forever?

It is rhetorical, and everyone knows the answer. They are dead. They are in the ground. The generations who kept deferring their return did not receive an endless supply of tomorrows. Neither did the preachers who begged them to turn. Even the faithful voices fell silent when their lives ended.

We assume otherwise about ourselves. We tell ourselves that God is a God of second chances, and He is, until the day He is not. He is slow to anger and rich in mercy. But if that mercy ran on forever with no end, there would be no such thing as judgment, and Scripture will not let us pretend there is none. At some point the clock stops and the decision is fixed.

Here is what that means for you. Grace belongs to God, not to you. You do not set the terms or name the deadline. You cannot promise yourself that the invitation open this morning will still stand at sixty, or on a deathbed, or next year. This could be the last time the call comes, or the first of a thousand more. You do not know.

But hear the good news beneath the warning. The One who calls is not in the ground. Jesus is alive, and the risen Christ is calling you now. Because He lives, the way home is open today. The prophets did not live forever. He does. Why would you wait? Will you return while He is still calling?

Reflect

Stop treating tomorrow as a promise God made you. Whatever return you have been postponing until life settles down, name the assumption underneath it, that there will always be more time. There may not be. Answer the call while it stands in front of you, today, and not at some better hour you have not been given.

Pray

King Jesus, I have spent Your patience as if it could never run out and treated tomorrow as something I am owed. I have set my own terms for a grace that was never mine to set. Forgive me. You are alive and calling me now, and the road home is open only because You live. Do not let me wait. I return to You today, while You are still calling. Amen.
