Zechariah 3:1 (CSB)
“Then he showed me the high priest Joshua standing before the angel of the Lord, with Satan standing at his right side to accuse him.”

Zechariah is shown a courtroom. Joshua the high priest stands before the angel of the Lord, and at his right hand stands Satan, there to accuse him. Joshua represents the whole nation, and he is dressed in filthy clothes. The guilt is real. The accuser is not lying.

Watch when the enemy shows up. Spurgeon called Satan a great coward, because he picks his moment when God’s people are already down. He waited until Joshua stood there in rags, then pressed the charge. If he can make you doubt your standing before God, he has done real damage to your faith and your service.

Now hear the answer. The angel does not claim Joshua is better than he looks. He does not deny the filth. He turns to the accuser and rebukes him, calling Joshua a stick pulled from the fire before it burned up (Zechariah 3:2). The whole rebuke rests on one thing. God chose him. That was the only defense, and it was enough.

This is the gospel pattern. Satan accuses you, the sinner, and every honest mouth is stopped, because the charges are true. So you do not answer him yourself. You let the angel of the Lord speak for you. He forgives iniquity. He commands the armies of heaven. That is no created messenger. That is the Son Himself, standing between you and the fire.

If you are in Christ, you do not stand before God in the rags of your sin. You stand in the righteousness of Jesus, and the case is already answered. Your past does not get the last word on your usefulness. He does.

Whose voice have you let define you, the accuser’s or the Lord’s?

Reflect

Name the accusation you keep replaying, the failure the enemy uses to tell you that you are disqualified. Hold it up against the verdict God has already spoken over everyone in Christ. Then stop pleading your own case, let your Advocate answer, and get back to the work He has given you.

Pray

King Jesus, I confess that I listen to the accuser more than I listen to You, and I have let old sins argue me out of serving You. Thank You that You do not merely cover my guilt but answer it, standing in my place before the Father. Silence the accuser with Your own voice, clothe me in Your righteousness, and free me to serve without fear. Amen.
